On Saturday, February 14, a hundred devoted volunteers of various ages and nationalities took part in the Beach Clean Up campaign, organized by twofour54 and supported by the Abu Dhabi Marine Conservation Society (ADMCS) to clean up the mangrove area next to the highway between Yas Island and Saadiyat Island.
The beautiful mangrove beach along the highway had been heavily littered with accumulating garbage, threatening one of the most precious ecosystems in the UAE, home to many diverse species. The area is one of the very few homes for many endangered birds and sea creatures and needs the preservation of this habitat to survive.
On the day of the cleanup, volunteers picked up a lot of plastic bags, bottles, tin cans, chairs and other strange items over the 300m stretch of the beach. In total, the cleanup succeeded in removing more than 1,000kg of trash in less than two hours, all of which was sent to the Centre of Waste Management.
The clean-up was made possible by the Abu Dhabi Marine Conservation Society, a self-funded organization made of about 20 volunteers that raises awareness of issues relating to the emirate’s marine eco-system. This was the first beach cleanup ever organized by ADMCS in collaboration with twofour54.
If you are interested helping ADCS with their important work, please email your details to admcssociety@gmail.com and they will get in touch about other volunteering opportunities.
